Security & safety window film
4mil to 14mil safety films anchored into the frame - the glass can still break, but it stays in the opening. Need glass that does not break at all? Ask about Riot Glass retrofit glazing.
Every commercial break-in starts with the glass. Whether it's a smash-and-grab at a jewelry counter, a brick through a storefront window during civil unrest, or a targeted forced-entry attempt on an office, the glass is the weak link. Commercial security window film upgrades that weak link into a delay barrier - buying you time for an alarm response, a lockdown, or a suspect to give up and leave.
DarkSide installs the full range of security-grade films: 4mil safety film for basic shatter containment, 8mil security film for smash-and-grab deterrence, and 14mil heavy-gauge film for high-threat facilities. For maximum performance we add structural silicone anchoring that bonds the film to the window frame, so even a shattered pane stays in the opening.
What security film actually does
Standard tempered glass shatters into a shower of small pieces on impact. Security film holds those pieces together in one flexible sheet - even after the glass is broken. That sheet stays in the frame, blocks the intruder, and turns a 3-second breach into a 30 to 90+ second obstacle. Long enough for alarms, cameras, and law enforcement to matter.
- 4mil to 14mil ply options - matched to your specific threat profile
- Delays forced entry by 30 to 90+ seconds vs. 3 seconds for bare glass
- Structural silicone anchoring bonds film to frame for maximum containment
- Blast-mitigating films tested to GSA and DOD blast standards
- Ballistic-resistant film available for pharmacies, banks, and government facilities
- Combines with solar and privacy performance in a single film
Who installs security film
Our security film clients include jewelers, pharmacies, cannabis dispensaries, government facilities, schools, houses of worship, banks, and any retail operation that has been targeted for smash-and-grab. Insurance carriers frequently offer premium discounts for buildings with certified security film installed - ask us for the documentation your insurer needs.
Free threat assessment
Not every window needs 14mil film. We start with a free on-site assessment, walk the perimeter with you, identify the vulnerable openings, and recommend the film grade that fits both your threat model and your budget. We install nights and weekends when needed, and we can phase the project across multiple visits if capital budget requires.

Frequently asked questions
How long does security film delay a break-in?
Independent testing shows 4mil film delays a forced entry by 15-30 seconds, 8mil by 30-60 seconds, and 14mil with structural anchoring by 60-90+ seconds. Bare tempered glass fails in about 3 seconds.
What is the difference between security film and Riot Glass?
Security film bonds to your existing glass and anchors it into the frame - the glass can still break, but it stays in the opening. Riot Glass is a retrofit security glazing system: shatter-resistant Armorplast panels installed into patented framing in your existing openings. It resists forced entry, blast, and - at UL Level 7 - gunfire, while looking and feeling like regular glass.
Does security film make my windows bulletproof?
Standard security film is not ballistic. It contains fragments and delays entry. For ballistic protection we install specialty retrofit systems tested to UL 752 standards - ask for details.
Will it change how my windows look?
Optically clear versions are invisible from inside and out. If you want to combine security with solar or privacy performance we have tinted and frosted versions too.
How much does commercial security film cost?
Safety 4mil runs about $8-$10 per square foot installed. Security 8mil $12-$15. 14mil with anchoring $18-$24. We provide fixed quotes after a free assessment.
What warranty comes with security film?
About a 12-year manufacturer warranty on commercial security film plus our lifetime workmanship guarantee. Structural anchoring systems carry the manufacturer's silicone warranty.
