State-by-state VLT limits and medical exemptions.

VLT is the number that matters

Visible Light Transmission is the percentage of light a film lets through. Lower number equals darker film. Every state writes its limits in VLT, and the limits differ by window position: windshield, front sides, rear sides, and rear glass.

California in plain terms

Front side windows must allow more than 70% of light in, so a light ceramic film is the compliant choice up front. Rear side windows and the rear windshield can be any darkness. A clear or lightly tinted strip is allowed on the top four inches of the windshield.

Medical exemptions

California allows darker film with signed documentation from a licensed physician or optometrist for conditions like lupus or light sensitivity. Keep the paperwork in the vehicle. We will install to your exemption once we see it.
